North Korean and US leaders met in Singapore for final preparations on the eve of the most unusual and anticipated yet historic summit between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump, in order to settle down animosity over Pyongyang’s nuclear arsenal. The meeting will be the first rounds of talks between a sitting US president and a leader of North Korea in Singapore, whose nuclear and ballistic missile endeavours have accelerated global concerns and soared relationship between the two.
Meanwhile, Trump said he has a ‘good feeling’ about the much-anticipated summit. In a tweet on Monday, Trump also wrote ‘excitement in the air’ in the Asian country ahead of the summit. While, North Korea’s state media confirmed that Kim is in Singapore and in an editorial published by Rodong Sinmun wrote ‘we will establish a new relationship to meet the changing demands of the new era’, reported BBC.
The 2 leaders have hogged headlines for their incessant up-and-down relationship over the past recent months. Trumps’s first year as the US president witnessed many bitter remarks between him and North Korea’s Kim, as the latter conducted numerous ballistic missile tests in defiance of the international community, which further resulted in economic sanctions.
In September 2017, North Korea conducted its 6th nuclear test. Following which, Kim declared that his country had achieved its mission of becoming a nuclear state.
However, in early 2018 major overtures were witnessed between North Korea and South Korea during the Winter Olympics. And in March, Trump startled the world by accepting an invitation from Kim to meet.
