The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 has concluded and England has become the new world champion. Team India who was at the top of the points table after group stage, returned home empty handed after facing a humiliating defeat in the semis against New Zealand. Virat Kohli and co.’s mislay was indigestible and heartbreaking for cricket fans. Following which, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ordered to investigate the reasons behind the poor performance and to inspect the areas where team lacked. There have been speculations that everything in the team is not fine. There have been some rift between skipper Virat Kohli and his deputy Rohit Sharma when it came to scoring runs.
The reports say that BCCI is also keen to discuss is the idea of split captaincy between captain Virat Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma. Talking to the media, a board member said that good teams start preparations immediately after one campaign ends and the biggest example is England Team who prepared and won the World Cup 2019. He added, in future, the cricket governing body may handover the command to Rohit Sharma for limited over format, while Virat Kohli is likely to continue as skipper for Tests.
“This would be the right time for Rohit to take over the mantle of the captaincy in the 50-over format. There has been immense support to the present captain and the management and it is time to plan ahead for the next World Cup and for that the existing ideas and plans need a fresh look. We all know some areas need a relook. Rohit would be the right man for the job,” the functionary said.
The Committee of Administrators (CoA) has already called Team India captain Virat Kohli, Coach Ravi Shastri and chief selector MSK Prasad to talk about the World Cup defeat.
“You are aware that Vinod Rai (CoA chief) has already mentioned that a review meeting will take place. This will have to be ascertained when the review takes place and it is important to get to the bottom of these rumours,” the functionary added. Interestingly, the last time there was a meeting where the CoA members had met with players and coach, differences between opinions was exposed between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma over rest to players in during IPL and before the World Cup.
