A 9-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a boy in Jaunpur area of Uttar Pradesh. The incident took place in Jaunpur’s Zafarabad in Kalyanpur village, reported news agency ANI. The minor victim is being treated at present and an investigation is underway. The incident comes 2 days after a 6-year-old was allegedly abducted and raped by a rickshaw puller in UP’s Banda.

A case has been registered under the Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) 2012.

A similar incident took place almost a month ago wherein a man allegedly tried to sexually assault a 10-year-old girl when she went to drink water from a nearby hand pump Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. The accused tried to rape the minor girl after he dragged her to a remote place, as reported by India.com.

Despite stringent laws in India, a report by the data journalism portal India Spend reveals that out of 39,068 rape victims, which includes women and girls, 16,863 of them are below the age of 18, which accounts for 43%.

The states which witnessed most child rapes cases nationwide in 2016 are Madhya Pradesh with 2,467, followed by Maharashtra with 2,292 cases and Uttar Pradesh 2,115 cases.

The report further reveals that Sikkim reported the highest number of rapes which is followed by another Northeastern state Mizoram and then Delhi.

Psychological Studies, a journal shows that about 18-20% of child rapes take place in the family and 50% in an institutionalized setting.
