Samajwadi Party parliamentarian Neeraj Shekhar quit his party and Rajya Sabha today. Neeraj Shekar who is the son of former prime minister Chandra Shekhar quit the Rajya Sabha membership on Monday, July 15.
According to the parliamentary sources, Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu has accepted Chandra Shekhar’s resignation. However, his term in Rajya Sabha was to end in November 2020.
In 2008, Shekhar became a member of the Lok Sabha in the by-election for Ballia constituency. In 2009, Shekhar had contested and won in the 15th Lok Sabha polls from Ballia constituency. He lost in the 2014 polls from the same constituency and the party sent him to Rajya Sabha. However, Shekhar demanded the ticket of 2019 LS polls to his party leader Akhilesh Yadav, but Yadav refused his demand and fielded Sanatan Pandey from the Ballia constituency.
There is speculation that he might join the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP).
