Former Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor and Dhavlsinh Zala are likely to be inducted into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at about 4 pm this evening.
Thakor had resigned from the Congress hours ahead of the first phase of 2019 general elections. Zala too resigned on the same day.
Thakor had won from Radhanpur seat in North Gujarat on a Congress ticket after he joined the party during the December 2017 State Assembly elections. The OBC leader, who was appointed national secretary after joining the Congress in 2017, had alleged that Congress ignored Thakor Sena while taking important decisions including the selection of candidates for 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Both Thakor and Zala, who had won from Bayad in Aravalli district, quit the Congress on April 10, 2019. The Gujarat Kshatriya Thakor Sena (GKTS) made an announced that both Thakor and Zala will join the BJP at the party’s Shri Kamalam headquarters at 4 pm on Thursday. Thakor is the president and Jhala a member of the GKTS.
In the July 5 Rajya Sabha elections in Gujarat, the duo had voted for BJP candidates S Jaishankar and Jugal Kishore Thakor. The two seats were left vacant by Union ministers Amit Shah and Smriti Irani.
Thakor rose to fame in 2015 after he organised de-addiction campaigns in Gujarat. He set up the OBC SC ST Ekta Manch in addition to the Gujarat Kshatriya Thakor Sena as a parallel organisation to the OBC community.
Other Congress leaders to leave the party recently include MLAs Jawahar Chavda and Parsotam Sabariya, who resigned from the party in March.
