American fashion designer Kate Spade was found dead at her apartment in Manhattan on Tuesday after an apparent suicide attempt. An official spokesperson of the New York Police Department confirmed suicide and revealed that the fashion designer had hanged herself in her bedroom. Although the police have recovered a suicide note from her house, the contents of the suicide note have been kept confidential. Early reports suggest that a housekeeper had found Kate in an unconscious state in her bedroom and decided to immediately call 911.
The official announcement of Kate Spade’s death was made on the company’s Instagram that read that the visionary founder of the brand has passed. Following the announcement, Kate’s older sister Reta Staffo, told a leading daily that the designer’s suicide was not unexpected as Kate was suffering from mental illness for the last three to four years and was medicating with alcohol. She further added that sometimes you simply cannot save someone from themselves.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Kate Valentine aka Kate spade is known for her chain of luxury bags and accessories that reflect class, sophistication, and modernity. After working in the accessory department at Mademoiselle in Manhattan, Kate recognised the lack of sensible and stylish bags in the fashion industry and thus established her own brand with her husband Andy Spade.
Launched in 1993, the company was established as Kate Spade handbags and soon expanded with a range of clothing and accessory line followed by home collection brand.
Kate and her husband sold 56% of the company shares to Nayman Marcus in 2006, after which Nayman sold the Kate Spade label to Liz Claiborne Inc. The company later changed its name to Fifth& Pacific and later changed it again to Kate Spade & company. In 2016, global luxury brand Coach acquired Kate Spade for $2.4 billion.
